More About
Angels Camp, CA

About Angels CampNamed after shopkeeper Henry Angel, who started a trading post at this site in 1848, Angels Camp was a popular spot for gold miners. Early diggers uncovered riches, and within 1 year approximately 4,000 miners populated the town to try their luck. Angels Camp sits atop numerous tunnels, which proved to be successful mines.

Angels Camp inspired Mark Twain to write his famous short story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”—his first published success. The tall tale is remembered each year in May during the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee, held, appropriately enough, at the Frogtown Fairgrounds. Fifty frogs compete in the grand finals in an attempt to break the world record, currently held by Rosie the Ribeter.
