About AustinIncorporated in 1856, Austin was already well-established when new resident George A. Hormel opened a small butcher shop in 1887. Austin remains the headquarters of what is now the Hormel Foods Corporation, a Fortune 500 company with an international footprint, and is also known as SPAM Town USA thanks to its most noted product.
The Historic Paramount Theatre, 125 4th Ave. N.E., was built in 1929 for stage productions and to show first-run movies. It is one of the few remaining “atmospheric” theaters in Minnesota; the interior recalls a Spanish courtyard, complete with an overhead nighttime sky filled with twinkling stars and rolling clouds. Tours are offered by appointment; phone (507) 437-4563.

AAA’s in-person hotel evaluations are unscheduled to ensure the inspector has an experience similar to that of members. To pass inspection, all hotels must meet the same rigorous standards for cleanliness, comfort and hospitality. These hotels receive a AAA Diamond designation that tells members what type of experience to expect.
