About Basking RidgeA hillside where animals from the surrounding swamplands could sun themselves inspired the name Basking Ridge. More than 10,000 years ago most of the region to the east was part of Lake Passaic, created when an accumulation of earth and stone carried by the Wisconsin Glacier blocked the Passaic River. A portion of the former lake, now a wetland, is known as the “Great Swamp” of New Jersey.
