About BataviaBatavia was only a junction of the old Genesee Road and Tonawanda Creek Indian trails when Robert Morris bought more than 3 million acres in western New York from Massachusetts in 1797. Having obtained the Indian title to the land by the Big Tree Treaty, Morris sold most of his holdings to the Dutch Holland Land Co. The town is named for the Netherlands republic from which the owners originated.
