DescriptionNamed after Daniel Boone, who had a cabin in the area in the 1760s, the city is high atop the Blue Ridge Mountains and is home to 18,000 students attending Appalachian State University. Boone is at the intersection of two scenic highways: A scenic portion of US 321 runs west across the Tennessee border, and a scenic portion of US 421 runs east to Winston-Salem.
Popular ski areas are nearby, including Beech Mountain, Appalachian Ski Mountain and Sugar Mountain.
