About BrainerdBrainerd was established by the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1871. The area is in the heart of north-central Minnesota's lake region; more than 460 lakes are within 25 miles of Brainerd. The Ojibwe people once hunted game and gathered blueberries in this densely forested area, and the lore of Paul Bunyan and his ox, Babe, pervades the region.
Recreational activities include cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. The 120-mile-long Paul Bunyan State Trail begins in Brainerd and continues north; the first 112 miles are paved for bicycling, hiking and skating. Auto and motorcycle racing takes place May through October at Brainerd International Raceway, north on SR 371 to 5523 Birchdale Rd.; phone (218) 824-7223 or (866) 444-4455.
