About BrooknealOne of the smallest incorporated towns in central Virginia, Brookneal was founded in 1802 upon the marriage of two landowners, John Brook and Sarah Neal. Patrick Henry, the state's first elected governor, had retired to the area in 1794, spending the last 5 years of his life at Red Hill plantation, which he called “the garden spot of the world.” Fire destroyed the manor home in 1919.
