DescriptionCamden, overlooking the Ouachita River, was an ancient Native American trail crossing. Early French settlers named the town Fabre's Hill. American pioneers arrived during the 1820s, and soon a thriving cotton-growing industry was established. The proximity of the river made easy the transport of up to 40,000 bales a season. Wiped out by the Civil War, the cotton industry was replaced by timber production.
River Drive and Sandy Beach Park offer good views of the river; the latter also provides a boat ramp. In June and July, Movies on the River are offered Friday at dusk at Riverwalk Amphitheater on Washington St. Nearby White Oak Lake State Park provides camping, hiking, biking, swimming, boating and fishing.
