About Cedar CityAn abundance of iron ore west of the site of present-day Cedar City induced English, Scottish and Welsh Mormon converts, all skilled miners, to settle the area. But the mines eventually closed down due to harsh winter weather, floods, poor harvests and cheap iron transported by the transcontinental railroad, and many settlers turned to raising livestock. Today the city benefits from proximity to nearby scenic areas.
