About ChesterfieldA number of the earliest land grants to English colonists lay along the south side of the James River and were recorded in Chesterfield's courthouse. During the American Revolution the courthouse served as the headquarters for Maj. Gen. Friedrich von Steuben. The importance of this training facility provoked the British—with the aid of Benedict Arnold—to burn the courthouse in 1781.
