About DemingFields of chiles flourish in the river valley around Deming, along with secondary crops cotton, onions, pecans, grapes and sorghum. The water that sustains them is the subsurface flow of the Mimbres River, which vanishes underground north of the city and reappears at the surface as a lake in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Southeast of this growing retirement center the Little Florida (flo-REE-da) Mountains yield agates, fire opals, jasper and semiprecious stones.
