About Detroit LakesThe name says it all—with more than 400 lakes in the vicinity, Detroit Lakes is a prime spot for such summer recreational activities as tubing, fishing, scuba diving and boating. Bicycling and golf are other warm-weather pastimes. In winter snowmobilers hit some 250 miles of groomed trails; cross-country and downhill skiing and ice fishing also are popular.
Bird watchers will want to explore Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge, which offers excellent opportunities for viewing waterfowl, marsh and shorebirds, in addition to birds of prey during spring and fall migrations. Prairie chickens, marbled godwits and other Midwestern prairie species are commonly seen. The refuge is 6 miles northwest of Detroit Lakes at the junction of CR 104 and Township Road 440; phone (218) 847-4431.
