Once the center of enormously valuable gold diggings, Downieville still retains a bit of gold rush atmosphere courtesy of narrow, tree-lined Main Street, where old brick and stone buildings have picturesque iron doors and shutters, and planks rather than cement make up some sections of sidewalk. Amateur prospectors can try their luck panning for gold along the stretch of the Yuba River that flows through the center of town.
The seat of Sierra County is a popular pit stop for mountain bikers and a convenient base if you're embarking on a nearby hiking, fishing or kayaking excursion.
