About FairplayFairplay was named by prospectors who settled it in 1859 when they were driven from nearby Tarryall by miners who had staked more claims than they could work. Thereafter scorned and referred to as “Grab-all,” Tarryall did not survive beyond its boom times.
Fairplay is now a marketing center for the surrounding South Park ranches. More than 20 log houses, all private residences, survive from the 1800s. The scenic portion of US 285, which runs through Pike National Forest between Poncha Springs and Morrison, passes through town.

In-person hotel evaluations are unscheduled to ensure the inspector has an experience similar to that of members. All hotels must meet the same basic requirements for cleanliness, comfort and hospitality to be AAA Approved. A rating of one to five AAA Diamonds tells members what type of experience to expect, from no-frills to highly personalized.
