About Fort RileyReached from exit 301 off I-70, Fort Riley is the home of the 1st Infantry Division. The fort was built in 1853 to protect travelers along the Santa Fe Trail. Originally established as Camp Center, the fort later was named for Gen. Bennett Riley, who led the first military escort down the Santa Fe Trail in 1829. By 1855 the fort was a cavalry post, its soldiers credited with helping open the frontier for settlement.
The 101,000-acre, 11,600-personnel military reservation includes camps Forsyth, Funston and Whitside, Marshall Army Air Field and the Custer Hill area. A large historical district offers some 270 stone buildings. The Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard stables are open Monday through Friday. Tours are available; phone ahead to confirm schedule.
