About Fort AtkinsonNative American effigy mounds are numerous in the Fort Atkinson area. Panther Intaglio, west on SR 106 at 1236 Riverside Dr., is of interest: Rather than forming a mound on the site, Indians dug an effigy into the earth. Poet Lorine Faith Niedecker was born on Blackhawk Island southwest of town in 1903 and lived most of her life along the banks of Rock River.
The Glacial River Trail is an 8.6-mile bike trail on a former rail bed running south from downtown Fort Atkinson to the Jefferson County line. The northernmost 4.5 miles are asphalt, the balance is crushed limestone. The trail features an archway, bronze sculptures, rest areas and fountains.
