Road Trips

About FranklinThe small mountain town of Franklin, on a ridge overlooking the Little Tennessee River, was named for Jesse Franklin, governor of North Carolina 1820-21. Rubies, sapphires and other gemstones are mined around Franklin, with numerous gem mining outfitters set up around town.

The portion of US 64 leading southeast to Highlands offers scenic views of the Nantahala National Forest as well as access to Cullasaja Falls and other area waterfalls.
