On the south side of the Potomac River, 38 miles east of Fredericksburg off SR 3 on SR 204, George Washington Birthplace National Monument includes 550 acres and a portion of the old Washington Plantation. John, the first Washington to settle in the area, arrived about 1657. In 1731 his grandson Augustine married Mary Ball of Epping Forest.
