About HarlingenNamed for a city in Holland, Harlingen earned a different moniker in its early days. Texas Rangers and U.S. Immigration and Customs officials patrolled the streets and railroad station in an attempt to maintain order in the border town, then known as “Six-shooter Junction.”
Harlingen is the home of the Marine Military Academy. The academy, a private school, offers a training program designed to help its graduates gain admission to top colleges and universities. Another educational landmark is the 1928 Bowie Elementary School, a striking example of Aztec Revival architecture.
