About HastingsThis Mississippi River town is noted for its Greek Revival buildings and Victorian houses. Boats are raised and lowered 12 feet while more than 6 million gallons of water pass through tunnels into the gates at Lock and Dam No. 2. A recreation area has an observation platform where visitors can watch barges, cruisers and canoes pass through the 600-foot-long lock.
Recreation of another sort can be found at Carpenter-St. Croix Valley Nature Center, along the St. Croix River at 12805 St. Croix Tr. S. The center's hiking trails become excellent snowshoe and cross-country ski trails in winter; phone (651) 437-4359.
