About High PointHigh Point earned its name by being the highest point on the original survey for the old North Carolina Railroad, but furniture design and production drive today's economy. With more than 50 area manufacturers, the city bills itself “The Home Furnishings Capital of the World.” Twice a year furniture designers, buyers and sellers converge on High Point for the High Point Market industry trade show. A four-story building in the shape of an 18th-century chest of drawers is said to be the world's largest and stands at 508 N. Hamilton St.
The Bernice Bienenstock Furniture Library, 1009 N. Main St., contains a comprehensive collection of design-related books, including rare volumes dating back to the 17th century. Tours are available by appointment; phone (336) 883-4011.
