About Hopewell CapeRichard B. Bennett, the only New Brunswick politician to become prime minister of Canada, was born in nearby Hopewell Hill in 1870. He took office in 1930 as the country's economy faltered and, perhaps unfairly, he shouldered most of the blame for the hardships of the Great Depression. After a landslide defeat for re-election and subsequent conflicts with his fellow Conservatives, Bennett left the country for England, where he served in the House of Lords. He died in 1947 and was laid to rest at his estate in Mickleham, Surrey—the only Canadian prime minister not to be buried on Canadian soil.
