About IpswichIn 1633 Ipswich was settled by a group of 12 colonists, among them several “proper gentlemen” who developed the town into a cultural center. Clothing industries, including shoemaking, lacemaking and machine knitting, later became the town's economic base. Tourism and the digging and marketing of clams are now a major source of income.
Richard T. Crane Jr. Memorial Reservation, 6 miles east on Argilla Road, offers 4 miles of shoreline and beaches on Ipswich Bay. The old Crane residence, called Great House, is open for tours in summer.
