DescriptionJasper, on the Little Buffalo River, an offshoot of the scenic Buffalo River, took its name from the jasper-green color of the waters of that stream. Passing through town, SR 7 is a Scenic Byway from Harrison north of Jasper to Hot Springs National Park.
In 1972 the Buffalo River, which travels 150 miles through bluffs as high as 440 feet and past wooded hillsides and cultural sites dating back 10,000 years, was designated the country's first National River. Waters range from relatively slow-moving to white-water upriver of Pruitt; the upriver section is generally floatable only in winter and spring. The many hiking trails along the river range from short day-use trails to routes for which a guide is suggested. Canoe rentals are available in Jasper.
