About KelloggKellogg, the Silver Valley's largest town, celebrates its heritage as a longtime mining community. The Coeur d'Alene mining district has yielded more than a billion dollars in silver, lead, gold and zinc; the Lucky Friday and Galena Mine are a couple of the largest mines that still operate. The Shoshone County Mining and Smelting Museum, also known as The Staff House Museum chronicles the colorful history of Silver Valley. The Sunshine Miners Memorial, off I-90 exit 54, commemorates the 1972 mine fire that claimed 91 lives. It was one of the nation's worst metal and nonmetal mine disasters.
The Kellogg area also is known for outdoor recreation, particularly its biking trails, which range from easy to “What was I thinking?” Accessible here is the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes, a 72-mile paved path that runs from the Montana border to the Washington state line. Hardy cyclists also can take their bikes up the Silver Mountain Gondola to enjoy 40 miles of trails, including some that descend 3,000 feet.
