About Kiawah IslandAmiable Kiawah Island invites you to slow down and relax for a spell. This barrier island is about 25 miles southwest of Charleston, separated from the mainland by the Kiawah River. Kiawah has an ambience that beckons—cobblestone lanes, clumps of cabbage palms, live oaks festooned with Spanish moss, 10 miles of wide oceanfront beach. And five championship courses make it one of South Carolina’s premier golf destinations.
Kiawah Beachwalker Park, 8 Beachwalker Dr. at the island’s western end, offers the only public beach on Kiawah. In addition to a flat, open stretch of sandy beach, facilities include a boardwalk, changing area and grills for picnicking; beach chair and umbrella rentals are available seasonally. Hours also vary by season and an annual park pass is available; phone (843) 768-2395.
Shopping Freshfields Village (165 Village Green Ln.), a pedestrian-friendly, town center-style shopping center, is home to such casual clothing stores as Leggiadro, Lilly Pulitzer, Tommy Bahama and Vineyard Vines.
