Description
Lake Stearns was renamed Lake Placid in the late 1920s by Melvil Dewey, creator of the Dewey Decimal Classification, a system for cataloging library books. A resident of Lake Placid, N.Y., Dewey wintered in Florida and was instrumental in the town's development as a resort. The town boasts dozens of murals that depict the area's history and ecology. It is also the Caladium Capital of the World.
Lake Placid is surrounded by 29 freshwater lakes that provide innumerable opportunities for fishing and boating. Lake June-in-Winter Scrub State Park is approximately 7 miles west off US 27; phone (863) 386-6099.
