About LapwaiLapwai (LAP-way) is the site of the first military fort in Idaho, built in 1862 to prevent clashes between pioneers and Native Americans in the area. The U.S. Army occupied the fort until 1884. Some of the old buildings around the parade ground are still in use. The Old Fort Lapwai Cemetery is located on the ridge just south of the fort.
