Lillooet, on the Fraser River, marked the first leg of the Cariboo Waggon Road and was therefore sometimes referred to as “Mile 0.” The trail reached north to such destinations as 100 Mile House and 150 Mile House, named for their distances from the start of the trail. In 1859, during the Cariboo Gold Rush, the 15,000 inhabitants of Lillooet made it the most populous city north of San Francisco and west of Chicago. The surrounding area now is of particular interest to rock hounds.
