More About
Manitou Springs, CO

About Manitou SpringsSitting at the foot of Pikes Peak, Manitou Springs is perhaps best known for the naturally carbonated mineral springs that bubble from the earth. Acknowledging the source of the curative power of the mineral waters, Native Americans named the springs for the Great Spirit Manitou.

Dr. William Bell, an English physician who was convinced that the springs provided “miracle cures,” envisioned spas that rivaled those in Europe. He encouraged health seekers, many suffering from consumption, to drink the waters and his patients did, indeed, recover. Little did he or his patients realize, however, that the reason for their cures had more to do with the dry mountain air than the water. Nonetheless, the springs made Manitou a leading spa area and contributed greatly to the successful development of Colorado Springs.

Behind the mineral springs, resort developments and vacation attractions, quaint houses and narrow lanes clamber up the steep hillsides. The town retains an art-colony atmosphere while serving thousands of vacationers each year.

Although once a “summer-only” vacation destination, Manitou Springs draws visitors year-round. The historic district offers numerous shops, eateries and art galleries. Special events include The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb auto race held in late June; the race begins west of Manitou Springs. Halloween weekend the town celebrates with the Emma Crawford Festival, which includes live music, horror movies, ghost tours and a coffin race.
