About ManteoOn historic Roanoke Island, Manteo is reached by causeway from the east or west. In 1585 the English tried to establish their first New World colony at Roanoke Island. Nearby, Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside's Union forces won the Battle of Roanoke Island in 1862. In 1902 the island and Hatteras were the scenes of Reginald A. Fessenden's experiments in wireless telegraphy.
