The Battle of Cedar Creek took place Oct. 19, 1864, when Confederate general Jubal Early executed a surprise attack on Gen. Philip Sheridan's army encamped on Cedar Creek, south of Middletown. Sheridan was at Winchester when the firing began, and he raced to the scene of the battle.
