About MiddletownThe Battle of Cedar Creek took place Oct. 19, 1864, when Confederate general Jubal Early executed a surprise attack on Gen. Philip Sheridan's army encamped on Cedar Creek, south of Middletown. Sheridan was at Winchester when the firing began, and he raced to the scene of the battle. Meeting the retreating soldiers about a mile north of Middletown, he not only halted the flight of his troops but also galvanized them to attack and defeat Early.
