About MissionMission, in the Rio Grande Valley, was founded by Oblate Fathers in 1824. They are credited with being the first to plant citrus in this region, which is now known for Texas Ruby Red grapefruit. Situated on the migratory flyway between Central and South American and Canada, the Rio Grande Valley is a prime bird-watching destination; nearly 500 species have been sighted in the region.
Renowned football coach Tom Landry was born and grew up in Mission. A mural painted by local artist Manuel Hinojosa on a 95-foot wall facing Tom Landry Street depicts his life and football career, including playing in five Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys.
Los Ebanos Ferry, 17 miles southwest on FM 886, is thought to be the last remaining hand-drawn ferry in the country. It transports three cars and several passengers across the Rio Grande at a time.
