About Mount AiryAlthough not incorporated until 1885, Mount Airy's history dates back to at least 1750, when it was a tiny riverfront settlement. And it still retains elements of the quintessential small town that served as the prototype for Mayberry, the fictional community in the much-beloved sitcom “The Andy Griffith Show.” Griffith grew up in Mount Airy and incorporated a number of its features into the show. His former home stands in the historic district, as does the Andy Griffith Playhouse, a schoolhouse turned theater and arts center. The Mount Airy Visitor Center displays a collection of Griffith memorabilia and other items of local historical significance.
The Surry Arts Council hosts a summer music series April through October at the Blackmon Amphitheatre, 218 Rockford St.; phone (336) 786-7998.
