About Mount WashingtonAt 6,288 feet, Mount Washington, in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, is the Northeast's highest peak. The weather at its summit rivals that of Antarctica: the average annual temperature is below freezing. Fifteen feet of snow is the winter norm, and summer temperatures rarely exceed 72 F. The highest wind velocity ever recorded—231 mph—occurred in April 1934.
Conditions can change in minutes from balmy to subfreezing. Nevertheless, in clear weather, the summit rewards visitors with a panorama that includes the Atlantic Ocean, Maine, New Hampshire, Québec and Vermont.
