About NewportNewport faces the Idaho border at the point where the Pend Oreille River enters Washington. A store opened on the Idaho side in 1889, and in 1890 a post office was established with the name Newport, in the hopes that the town would attract river traffic. In 1892 the Great Northern Railroad built a depot on the Washington side of the border and the community shifted west, thriving as an outfitting center for nearby mines.
The original settlement is now Oldtown, Idaho , separated from Newport by State Avenue. Newport also is the Washington entryway to the International Selkirk Loop.
