About NilesBecause the banners of France, England, Spain and the United States have flown successively over this region, Niles is called the City of Four Flags. Its position as a stop on the 1830s Detroit-to-Chicago stagecoach route encouraged industrial and commercial development. Author Ring Lardner and the Dodge brothers of automobile fame were born in Niles. The town was also the childhood home of Aaron Montgomery Ward, who founded his mail-order business in 1872.
