North Platte was the home of William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody. Buffalo soldiers and Medal of Honor figures of the past, though not as widely known, are buried at Fort McPherson National Cemetery, 13 miles east via I-80 to Maxwell, then 4 miles south. The cemetery was once occupied by Fort McPherson, an important military post that protected travelers on the Oregon Trail. The 20th Century Veterans' Memorial, I-80 and US 83 in Iron Horse Park, honors those who served in modern military conflicts. It features murals, a walk of honor and larger-than-life bronze sculptures. Learn More...
