About OaklandOutdoor opportunities abound in Oakland. Herrington Manor State Park, 5 miles northwest on Herrington Manor Road, offers both summer and winter activities, including cross-country skiing and hiking. Near the confluence of Muddy Creek and the Youghiogheny River, Swallow Falls State Park, 9 miles northwest on Herrington Manor-Swallow Falls Road, is home to the state's largest waterfall—Muddy Creek Falls.

Covering some 1,500 acres, Cranesville Swamp was formed during the ice age. Due to the high elevation and cool climate, the swamp contains vegetation normally found in Arctic regions. The boardwalk through the bog is open year-round. A self-guiding audio tour is available.
