About PeruAn industrial community and the former site of a Miami Indian village, Peru is best known as the former home base of the various traveling circuses that crisscrossed the country. Troupes including the well-known Hagenback-Wallace circus wintered in the area as early as the 1800s, and for many years the city's economy focused on the circus. Songwriter Cole Porter, born in Peru in 1891, is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery.
