About PictouSent by the Philadelphia Co. in 1767, six families from Pennsylvania and Maryland settled Pictou, formerly the site of an ancient First Nations village. The Dutch cargo ship Hector arrived in 1773 bearing 179 passengers from the Scottish Highlands, the first of thousands to emigrate from Scotland to Canada in the next century. As the main port of entry, Pictou became known as “the birthplace of New Scotland.”

Three rivers empty into the harbor, making Pictou one of Nova Scotia's largest lobster fisheries as well as an active shipbuilding center.
