About PierreIn the 1800s, homesteaders and prospectors roughed up Pierre on their voyages west. However, a more civilized and family-friendly reputation prevails today in South Dakota's state capital. Interesting historic sites proliferate much like the prairie dogs that overrun the local landscape.

On Wednesdays from June through August, the public areas of the Governor's Mansion are available for touring. Reservations are required 24 hours in advance; for information phone the chamber of commerce.

The Missouri River affords outstanding recreational opportunities, including boating, fishing and hunting, at such locations as Farm Island State Recreation Area and Lake Oahe.
