DescriptionPotsdam was settled in 1803 by land agent Benjamin Raymond. Five years later a post office opened to serve a thriving community of more than 900. The Clarkson family ran a farm and a variety of businesses, built Trinity Church and founded the Thomas Clarkson Memorial College of Technology, now known as Clarkson University. Raymond built a schoolhouse, which became part of the state university system in 1949. Sandstone quarried in the area has been used for structures in Ottawa, Syracuse, and New York City.
