About RockportRockport is a picturesque resort noted as an artists' colony and as one of the major birding areas in the country. Twice a year thousands of migratory waterfowl and other birds arrive to nest and breed on the nearby islands. A local wildlife refuge in Little Bay, Connie Hagar Wildlife Sanctuary was named for a legendary Rockport birder, whose efforts helped establish Rockport's birding reputation.
Birds are often the subject of Rockport's other major interest: art. By remodeling rundown buildings on Austin Street for use as galleries and studios, the Rockport Art Association sparked a restoration of neighboring buildings that now house shops and restaurants.
