About Rocky MountLocated on North Carolina's coastal plain, Rocky Mount was named for a large granite outcropping at the Falls of the Tar River. The 3.9-mile Tar River Trail traces the banks of the Tar River; the Tar River Reservoir offers boating, water skiing, fishing, swimming and picnicking.
