About Routt National ForestAccessible via US 40, Routt National Forest lies astride the Continental Divide. The 1.26 million-acre forest offers many scenic areas. Totally within Routt are the 160,000-acre Mount Zirkel Wilderness, surrounding the rugged Park Range, and the 45,190 acres of Sarvis Creek Wilderness.

Other wilderness areas partially within Routt include Flat Tops Wilderness, its 235,214 acres co-administered with the White River National Forest. A portion of the 23,492-acre Platte River Wilderness falls into Routt, while the rest is part of Medicine Bow National Forest.

In Routt’s eastern section, the 21,090 acres of Never Summer Wilderness spill into the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests.

In the northeastern section are the 9,924 acres of the Neota Wilderness and the 73,068 acres of the Rawah Wilderness, both part of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. Pack and saddle trips can be arranged.

Facilities for camping and picnicking are available in the summer; there are recreation areas at Big Creek Lake and Dumont Lake, and along the Elk and Bear River areas. The Fish Creek Falls area offers hiking and picnicking, a trail for the physically challenged and other facilities.

Medicine Bow National Forest and Thunder Basin National Grassland, both in Wyoming, are jointly administered with Routt.
