About Ruidoso DownsFrom humble origins in a mountain field in 1947, Ruidoso Downs Race Track—also the site of the Racehorse Hall of Fame—is a premier facility for quarter horse and Thoroughbred racing. The All-American Futurity is held on Labor Day, the final day of the racing season. Famed as the world's richest quarter horse race (the purse exceeds $3 million), it is the final leg of quarter horse racing's Triple Crown. It is preceded by the Ruidoso Quarter Horse Futurity and the Rainbow Futurity, which take place in June and July, respectively. For more information phone (575) 378-4431.
The 84-mile-long Billy the Kid National Scenic Byway more than lives up to its name in terms of impressive mountain vistas. Maps and information are available from the scenic byway interpretive center on US 70, next to the Hubbard Museum of the American West.
Events at the Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium, held the second full weekend in October, include cowboy poetry readings, musical performances, roping demonstrations, a chuck wagon cook-off and displays of Western arts and crafts.
