DescriptionSan Carlos, north of Coolidge Dam, is a trading center and headquarters for the San Carlos Indian Agency. The Apaches operate one of the largest cattle ranches in this area. The San Carlos Apache Reservation offers some of the best trophy-hunting and fishing in the state; permits are required. For permit information contact the San Carlos Recreation and Wildlife Department, P.O. Box 97, San Carlos, AZ 85550; phone (928) 475-2343.
Coolidge Dam, about 9 miles southeast on the Gila River, impounds the waters that irrigate the Casa Grande Valley. Construction of the dam was delayed until a solution satisfactory to the Apache Indians was found concerning the disturbance of tribal burial grounds. Once it was agreed that a concrete slab would cover the cemetery, construction resumed.
