Second Mesa, near the junction of SRs 264 and 87, is within a Hopi Reservation that occupies a large tract in the center of the vast Navajo Nation Reservation of northeastern Arizona. The mesa is home to three Hopi villages: Shungopavi, where most of the tribe's religious and ceremonial activities originated; Sipaulovi, the last village founded after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680; and Mishongnovi. Resident basketmakers specialize in coiled basketry, which involves wrapping, weaving and stitching colorful grasses and yucca together.
