Slave Lake is on the southeast shore of Lesser Slave Lake, the second-largest lake in Alberta. Popular with bird-watchers and recreationalists, the expansive body of water is easily accessible by automobile. Six kilometres (4 mi.) north on Hwy. 88, Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park hugs the lake's east shore and provides snowshoeing and cross-country skiing opportunities in winter as well as camping and hiking during the summer. The park also is home to the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory and the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation. Riverboat Daze takes place in early July.
